The Circle of Women is a non-profit organization which supports the
self-sufficiency of indigenous Mixteca women in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Through their connection to other women, women gain confidence and opportunities to participate more fully in the decision-making process in their families and communities.

Our Vision: We strive to realize social justice for women by supporting self-reliance, raising consciousness of individual talents and skills and enhancing cross-cultural relations.

We have three core projects:

  1. Microenterprise project with weavers
  2. Literacy program
  3. Health education project

In 2006, the Circle of Women, in consultation with the weavers, piloted a literacy program. Augustina and Edith (left) are indigenous teachers in our literacy program.

As a child, Odilia (right) went to primary school where children said things to her which “made her heart hurt.” She didn’t go back. After attending the Circle of Women’s literacy classes she can now read and speak Spanish. She sees learning as very important and
knows it can be accomplished in a safe environment. She is going on to

primary school and probably will be able to finish within 18 months.
